The Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care

As the first and only such facility within a 60-mile radius of Terre Haute, The Gibson Family center for Hospice Care serves as a peaceful environment to promote comfort, dignity and quality of life. The center is located in Union Hospital (west building), Fifth Floor.

Legacy Lives Here. Expanding the Vision.

Comforts of Home

The center is a family-supportive setting for patients to receive around-the-clock medical care in the comfort of home-like environment. There are eight private patient suites. Each suite is furnished for the comfort of our patients and families. The center also has a family room, kitchen and dining area, laundry room, children’s playroom, and a chapel to provide additional spaces for family members to gather or spend time in reflection.

The General Inpatient (GIP) level of care is called for when a patient’s pain or other symptoms cannot be effectively managed in the patient’s home or other setting. The patient requires an advanced level of care that is better managed during a short stay in an inpatient setting.

The average length of stay is approximately 5 days. Assistance with discharge planning will be provided to transition the patient to another setting when inpatient care is no longer required. Ongoing hospice care can be provided at the patient’s home or in a facility.

To qualify for inpatient hospice care, a patient should meet at least one of the following: severe pain or symptoms that require frequent medication adjustments and monitoring, severe nausea or vomiting, sever wounds that require frequent treatment or dressing changes, unmanageable respiratory distress, or extreme agitation.

Inpatient Hospice is a covered benefit under Medicare and Medicaid when deemed medically necessary by a doctor. Private insurance companies may offer a Hospice Benefit Plan, as well. Private pay options are available to those who do not fit medical criteria, but feel the unit is the best place for short-term hospice care.
